    Property Description
What to Expect

Escape to a small town's historic environment reminiscent of a prosperous, yet simpler time in America's past. The home's high ceilings, exceptional oak woodwork, elegant staircase, elaborate wrap-around porch, and other original design details, create a comfortable atmosphere. Each of the second floor bedrooms have ceiling fans, are furnished with antiques, are decorated with local historic photos, and are absent the modern intrusions of television, telephones and computers. The three bedrooms share a spacious bathroom with a large 6' tub and shower. In addition to the living and dining rooms, and the elaborate porch, there is an upstairs sitting area, where guests can enjoy a good book, play board games, or simply gather to talk or plan the day. A small refrigerator, stocked with bottled water, is provided for guests' use. After a full candlelight breakfast in the dining room, guests are invited to explore a variety of opportunities for enjoyment and recreation in the surrounding area. As the name implies, Broadlawns features manicured grounds, which lend themselves to special events such as weddings, receptions, reunions and retreats, or for overnight guests to simply enjoy.

Our Location

The rural setting of Broadlawns offers a quiet respite from the distractions of more populated areas, yet is located about a 30 minute drive to Norwich or Cortland, and about an hour to Syracuse and Binghamton. The Finger Lakes and Leatherstocking Regions, the Upper Delaware River Valley, Cooperstown and the southwestern portion of the Adirondacks are easy day drives. Each season offers unique opportunities for viewing the changing scenery.

History of the Home

This early 20th century, Colonial Revival home is situated on the edge of a quaint historic hamlet in central New York's Chenango County. Built by Mr. and Mrs. Holden Mathewson in 1908-09, near the scenic Otselic River, the house and carriage barn retain their original design, and are listed on the National and New York State Registers of Historic Places. As a partner in the once world renown Gladding Fishing Line Company, Mr Mathewson and his wife enjoyed a comfortable life in their stately home.
Most of the community's homes are part of a National Historic District. Nestled in the rural agricultural
Otselic Valley, this once thriving commercial center for the Town of Otselic remains very much intact. Guests are encouraged to take time to tour the hamlet and imagine its heyday when it boasted numerous businesses, along with the once prominent fishing line company. Since 1932, South Otselic has also been the home to one of New York State's twelve fish hatcheries.

Things to See and Do

Take a leisurely stroll around the"fish ponds" at the adjacent state fish hatchery, where the state's walleye and tiger muskie get their start. Hike the local sections of the statewide Finger Lakes Trail, just outside the hamlet. Fish for Brown trout in the Otselic River, and enjoy hiking, birdwatching, hunting and other outdoor recreational pursuits in thousands of acres of nearby state forest lands. Take a Sunday drive to view the constantly changing landscapes of farms, forests, streams and small historic communities; and enjoy the region's country fairs, festivals, auctions, and other local events throughout the year. During the snowy season, cross country ski, snowshoe or use the area's established snowmobile trail system. Downhill skiing is less than an hour's drive at Greek Peak.

Guests may also wish to walk through the hamlet of South Otselic, with its historic houses, barns and businesses. A visit would not be complete without stopping by the historic cemetery on the hill across from Broadlawns, where local resident Grace Brown lies at rest. Her fateful death in 1906 inspired novelist Theodore Dreiser to write "The American Tragedy" and was the basis for the movie, "A Day in the Sun".

Environmentally Friendly

At Broadlawns we support green energy practices, including the use of energy efficient lighting, ceiling fans, steam heat supplemented with a wood pellet stove, environmentally friendly detergents, air drying our linens when weather permits, and using rechargeable batteries whenever possible.

Our Pledge

Whether Broadlawns is your base for day excursions, a temporary stopping off point, or your final destination, we will do our best to make you feel at home, and to ensure that your stay is pleasant, relaxing and memorable.
