Rufus Abbott started building this home in 1839 and finished it in 1845 just before his family left with Brigham Young to travel to Salt Lake City, Utah in February 1846.
Rufus and Anna Abbott where two of the original members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were baptized by Peter Whitmer in 1830 while living in the state of New York. The Abbott family traveled with the Saints to Ohio, Missouri (where they lost a son at Hunns Mill) and then traveled on to Nauvoo where they built this home.
With the Abbott's being some of the original members of the LDS Church you can imagine the guest that have come to this home while in Nauvoo. The history of the home is beyond the imagination and the spirit that is here is humbling.
